The 4 Best Free Marketing Tactics For Freelance Writers

Okay. You’re a kickass writer.

You’ve got all of your ducks in a row.

You’re ready to bring client's visions to life with your witty, well-crafted, fantastic copy.

The world is at your feet, and you’re ready to go.

Only problem? You don’t have any clients, and you don’t know how to promote your services. with free marketing tactics.

Promoting your services as a copywriter can be a tricky one, especially if you don’t want to fork out the big bucks.

To be honest, if you are relatively new to the business, I would actually suggest you don’t spend money on marketing just yet, and opt for free marketing tactics instead.

Start with some of these easy to set up and free options, and take it from there. You can take your learnings from these free marketing tactics and put them into paid alternatives in the future anyway!

Instagram and Facebook

You are probably already using one or both of these social media channels.

If not, where have you been? I might have to revoke your internet rights…

So you likely already know that these channels can be used for promoting your services. But, if you’re like I was when I first started out, you’re likely reluctant to put yourself out there to all of your friends and family.

Why?

The most common reason and this was the same for as well, is the fear of embarrassment or judgment.

But I’m about to tell you a very important lesson, that can be used in all walks of life if you are worried about what other people think.

No one actually cares.

I mean they care, obviously, but not that much!

And really, if you can’t share your work with your closest and dearest for fear of ridicule, how are you going to be able to pitch with confidence to potential clients?

Post about your website or your services, ask people to share your page, run giveaways or discounts on your services, anything! Just make sure that you are active and consistent, and watch as your follower count increases with these free marketing tactics.

What happens when your follower count increases, I hear you ask?

You have even more people to market your services to, or to pass on your information to their followers. So you have more people to use your free marketing tactics on!

Blogging

This is another of the free marketing tactics that many writers avoid. A lot of writers avoid doing this because you are writing content that is not leading to a direct source of income.

But I’m asking you to think about the big picture here!

Every blog post you make is an opportunity for someone to discover your work on google or another prominent search engine.

It is also an opportunity for you to practice your skills.

Not only that, but you are continuing to increase your portfolio, so when it comes time to pitch for jobs with potential clients, you have even more incredible content to share with them!

If you also leave an opt-in proposition at the bottom of your site, such as a newsletter sign-up (Btw please sign up to my newsletter if you haven’t already k?), this is an excellent way to build up an email database, that you can market your services to at a later date.

These potential customers will be more inclined to work with you, as they have already seen the brilliant content that you can produce.

LinkedIn

Similar to your more casual social media platforms, it is also important to update your business social media platform, or start one if you don’t already have one. This is one of the best free marketing tactics.

LinkedIn is another great social media platform to highlight your skills and also attach a copy of your CV

Providing clients with your LinkedIn page when you bid on their project is an excellent way to show them you are a professional and you take your work seriously.

Monthly Newsletter

Finally, and this one takes a little bit more work to set up but is totally worth it, a monthly newsletter is one of the best free marketing tactics.

Once you have managed to begin to gather an email database from your blog posts, linked in, and social media pages, you can start to contact these leads with a monthly newsletter.

Use this as an opportunity to tell them about new blog posts, discounts on your services, and as a little reminder each week of just how brilliant you are!

Use these free marketing tools to kickstart your business, and watch as the clients begin rolling in!

Before you know it you’ll be upping your prices and selecting who you work with because you’re so in demand.
