8 Powerful Tips for Writing Your Very First eBook

Writing an eBook can be a life-changing experience. Whether you are looking to make a consistent stream of income on the side, or perhaps you are wanting to take the first major step towards a career as a writer, crafting an ebook is a brilliant place to start.

A lot of writers understand this, and they know the benefits that writing an ebook can bring, but they still have not started writing their own.

Why is that?

Some are unsure where to begin, some are concerned they won’t have time to work on it, and others are worried that their work won’t be very good.

That’s where these essential tips come in.

I myself have worked with agencies for a couple of years now, ghostwriting fiction and nonfiction books. In That time, I have assisted many clients in allowing their ebook vision to come to life.

Over time, I have learned that these eight tips are all you need to come up with a killer idea, research thoroughly, and write an excellent first draft.

Eight Tips for Writing Your First eBook

The most common mistake new writers make when they are working out how to write their ebook is quickly selecting an idea they believe is great, without looking deeper into whether there is a market for a book on that topic.

Choose a Topic

There may be a few topics at the forefront of your mind that seem like excellent options, as you know there is a big market for books on that topic. But if your objective is to make money, I would suggest you steer clear from writing a self-help or dieting book. You will probably find that there are already a lot of books in the market on these topics, and you will be competing against some big names.

Instead, pick a topic that you know a lot about, and one that you will find joy and excitement writing about. This will help reduce the amount of research you need to do, and greatly increase your chances of writing your book to completion.

Identify Your Unique Expertise

If you are unclear about what topics you might specialise in, then think about some of the blogs or magazines that you read frequently. These will give you an idea about what you enjoy learning about and may enjoy writing about.

Once you have picked your topic, delve deeper into it. You may find that there are particular article themes that arise quite often, each with a slightly different viewpoint. These articles would suggest that they are popular topics, and this would suggest they will be popular subject matter for an ebook.

Survey Your Audience

If you have an audience that you can lean on, such as through a newsletter or blog, use this to your advantage.

Not only will they act as your potential core audience, but they are also an excellent place to get ideas and inspiration from.

Allocate Time for Research

Read Similar Books

This probably sounds like a simple tip, but so many writers depend too heavily on research gathered from articles and blogs and don’t consider turning to other ebooks.

Regardless of what your topic may be, it is likely you will find ebooks on similar topics. If you are unable to, that is normally a warning sign that your topic is too niche.

Don’t worry, I’m not asking you to reach each word of every ebook. Instead, find the parts that are most relevant to your book, and read those ones.

Fact Check

If the topic that you have selected consists of many statistics or facts that require a regular reference, that it can be extremely tempting to copy them without checking them for yourself. But if you aren’t checking them, who’s to say the person before you didn’t check them either?

A good tip is that anything that you see that is presented as a fact that may seem hard to believe or out of place, make sure you research it for yourself before including it in your work.

Develop a Full Outline

One of the easiest ways to make your writing simpler is to create a detailed and clear outline at the very start. If you don’t, it can be too easy to get caught out a few chapters into writing your ebook.

Your outline needs to layout a title for each chapter, as well as subheadings or subsections, which highlight talking points you want to cover in each one.

Write Distraction-Free

For most of us, writing is a very high-energy, demanding task, and it is very easy to give up when distractions come along.

Keep temptation out of your path. Build a distraction-free environment. Switch off your phone, sign out of social media pages, and remove anything else that could cause you distractions.

Set yourself up to be successful by building an environment that will allow you to achieve your goals.
